-Why are custom-made cakes so expensive?

Ordering a custom-made cake is not the same as ordering a cake from a grocery store or big chain store such as Wal-Mart or Costco. Custom-made cakes are made fresh-to-order and to a customer’s specifications. We deliver what the customer wants in terms of flavour and design. Rarely are two cakes ever alike. All of our cakes, fillings and icings are made from scratch, using ingredients you can actually pronounce (i.e. no pre-packaged cake mixes or ready-made icings used here).

Custom cake decorating also requires special tools and equipment which have to purchased by a cake decorator and can be expensive. These tools include special knives, leveling tools, impression mats, cake pans, modeling tools, molds, wires, dowels, foams, cake boards, icing spatulas, airbrush kits etc., just to name a few.   There is also the cost of electricity to bake the cake.

Making a custom-made cake also takes a lot of work. Typically, it can take 8-12 hours (sometimes more) to complete a cake. Cakes that are more elaborate and detailed take more time and labour than a simple cake.

All of these things get factored into the cost of a cake.
